A short history of irony

In the 1980ies, moral engagement seemed the antidote to icecold Thatcherism. Selfrighteousness was abound, and led to moral blunders like the Band Aid lyrics (Bono: "Well tonight thank God it's them instead of you").
In the 1990ies, history was over, and irony replaced politics. T-Shirts with Brandt Zwieback symbolized this total retreat from the world, rediculing any serious statement.
Enter September 11, George W. Bush, Iraq, Darfur and the financial crisis. People started to realize that politics never stopped and could - surprise!- hurt them. Barack Obamas grandiose rhetorics took advantage of that new need for orientation.
However, a return to simplistic moralism is impossible in a postmodern society. Enter post irony. Be serious in a non-serious format. Be outspoken, but in a flamboyant fashion. Care, but offer a shimmering surface.
